Review by Diabetic Reader for The New Family Cookbook for People with Diabetes Rating: A wonder cookbook with lots of good, easy to prepare recipes that help me stick to the diabetic diet plan my registered dietitian prepared for me. My family also enjoys many of the recipes even though they are not diabetic.

The only complaint I have about the book is the index. I use the index frequently when I am looking for a specific recipe. This book does not put letters of the alphabet in the index as a location aid in finding a listing.

Review by Sheila Kennedy for The New Family Cookbook for People with Diabetes Rating: I love this cookbook ! My son, age 12, was recently diagnosed with type 1 diabetes. The change in diet has been hard for him. With help from the recipes in "The New Family Cookbook for People with Diabetes", we have been able to find things that my son can have. He especially likes the Chicken Nuggets, Creamy Macaroni and Cheese, and Angel Food Cake with Cocoa Whipped Cream. There are many different types of recipes in this book. I'm sure there are some for everyones tastes.

Although substitutions were noted, the invoice indicated that the expiration dates were in 2010 (product was ordered June 2009). After looking at the boxes, I noticed that one of them was due to expire in Sept 2009. This particular box also had the prescription information for a patient in PA. I contacted Deep Discount Center who said the reason for this is because they purchase supplies from pharmacies in cases where the customer did not pick up their medication/supplies. I was kind of disturbed to see this woman's personal information (address, phone #, DOB, etc) on the package. I shredded her personal information, and I hope anyone else in this situation would do the same. Deep Discount Center sent me a free 50 count box of test strips free of charge due to the error in expiration.

Although this has nothing to do with Deep Discount Center, I am more cautious now about ordering prescriptions at local pharmacies and I would like to warn other consumers that if they do not pick up what they ordered at pharmacy, it may end up in a warehouse like Deep Discount Center. I hate to think how many of my prescriptions with my personal information may be floating around.

As a registered dietitian and an expectant mother myself, I loved Elizabeth’s book! The information is presented in a very clear, concise, and usable way that is perfect for every parent and parent-to-be. As a first time mother, I have purchased a LOT of books, but this is by far my favorite because it really focuses on all aspects of pregnancy – before, during and after! I like all of the lists and tables in the book, and I love all of the recipes! I have truly found this book to be an invaluable resource, and recommend it to all of my friends, family, and clients.

Sequeira for The New Family Cookbook for People with Diabetes Rating: As a Registered Dietitian, for more than 20 years, and Certified Diabetes Educator, for over 10 years, I was so distressed by reviewer comments regarding sugar in the diabetic diet, that I am taking time to respond.Since 1994 dietitians and educators working with people with diabetes have been trying to get the truth out about sucrose (sugar). Sugar is not a forbidden food for people with diabetes. Scientific evidence from more than a dozen studies has shown that the use of sugar does impair blood glucose control in people with type 1 or type 2 diabetes. Sugar and foods containing sugar must be substituted for other carbohydrates, gram for gram, and not simply added to the diabetes meal plan. In making such substitutions, the nutrient content of concentrated sweets and sucrose-containing foods, as well as the presence of other nutrients frequently ingested with sucrose, such as fat, must be considered.The bottom line for people with diabetes is to check the total carbohydrate in a recipe or on a food label and work that into their diabetes meal plan. Because there are individual variations in blood glucose response, self-monitoring is an important part of diabetes control.

But everyone can still learn and Elizabeth Ward surprised me with how much excellent information is packed into this easy to read book. She dispells a lot of myths and I love the "Words of Motherly Wisdom" from other real life moms. Good nutrition is so important at all stages of life but when you are pregnant it is vital to watch what you eat, keep food safe, and keep yourself healthy for that developing child. I highly recommend this book to any woman who is thinking of becoming pregnant or is pregnant, even if it is not your first pregnancy!
